2012 Arqiva award winners review
So, in what seems like a timely tradition with Earshot – lets take a look into some of the production and marketing worthy winners at the 2012 Arqiva Commerical Radio Awards.
The Awards were handed out at London’s Westminster Bridge Park Plaza Hotel, attended by Take That’s Mark Owen and classical star, Katherine Jenkins. The Awards were hosted by Absolute Radio’s Christian O’Connell, with guest presenters including Ronnie Wood, Kay Burley and Lisa Snowdon, with live music from Noisettes, Stooshe and Misha B. It seemed the night’s bragging rights went to Global Radio who picked up eight awards on the night but let’s take a better look at those clever folk who picked up gongs for Station Imaging, Marketing Campaign, Radio Station Event of the Year and Best Content campaign.
Station Imaging
Winner: Jack FM Oxford
The small team based in leafy Oxfordshire are no stranger to winning an award or two and the guys do it once again with their Paul Darrow voiced station imaging. As well as picking up station of the year – the team also scooped the Station Imaging award.

If you are still up for more audio goodness – why not take a listen to Joe Thomas back in 2010 sharing some of the secrets of the Jack magic on the Earshot Creative Review podcast. Joe’s actually at Absolute Radio now, but still worth a listen.
Marketing Award
Winner: Touch 102 – The Pride of Stratford Award
Local radio still has a very relevant place in today’s world and the team at Touch 102 generated a successful marketing campaign/event strategy to help put the radio station and its listeners in the centre of an awards programme. With minimal budget and all funded by sponsorship – the Pride of Statford Awards put a spotlight on local worth award winners. Interaction with a voting process, local media tie ups, attenance and approval from local business people plus a ‘suited and booted’ finale event ensured the Quidem group scored gold for this category. The 2013 event is already in full flow and has secured sponsorship from Barclays – check out this video from the inagural awards show:
Here’s the team looking very happy with their award:
Best Event of the Year
Winner: Capital FM’s Jingle Bell Ball
Capital’s balls are bigger than ever before (!) and is always one of the hottest tickets in town. The 2011 event was no other taking over two days at the infamous 02 Arena. The event promoted across the network brought world class artists to the stage with multiple mid show promotions and features plus a whole host of digital and interactive content for the Capital audience both pre-event, during and post event – seeing social media numbers increase as well as station brand awareness.
Held over two nights with artists such as Rihanna, Jessie J, Olly Murs and The Wanted. Commerical highlights also included partnerships with Windows 7 and Alvin and the Chipmunks film when Alvin joined the Capital team backstage at the Ball and interviewed Pixie Lott, Jason Derulo and The Wanted to celebrate the film release.
Best Use of Branded Content
Winner: Arla Starbuck’s Frappuccino and Capital FM Summertime Ball
We thought we’d have a video to do all the talking as it shows perfectly how Global Radio launched the new Starbuck’s Frappuccino to live – great efforts all round from the Global Radio team and Carat Sponsorship.
The awards recognise excellence and achievement across the whole spectrum of commercial radio output, from presenters and programming to advertising and marketing. It’s clear that this years winners all show big ideas, creativity and the proof that radio can deliver big concepts and results. From multi-artist events to local radio celebrations – radio creativity is still very much in the mindsets of audiences and advertisers alike and that’s not going to change.
